When symptoms such as persistent cough, shortness of breath, chest pain, or abnormal findings warrant further investigation, Dr. Hsieh will refer you for the appropriate imaging studies. This may include chest X-rays, CT scans of the chest, or other specialized imaging. We coordinate with local imaging centers to ensure timely scheduling and will review all results with you to determine the next steps in your care.
Patients with persistent cough lasting more than 8 weeks, unexplained shortness of breath, fluid on the lungs, recent or recurrent pneumonia, abnormal chest X-ray findings, or those who need follow-up imaging for known pulmonary conditions. Imaging helps identify the underlying cause of symptoms when a physical exam and initial testing are not sufficient for diagnosis. Imaging referrals are also appropriate for evaluating post-COVID lung changes.

When should I get a chest CT scan instead of a chest X-ray?
Chest X-ray is appropriate for the initial evaluation of acute symptoms such as suspected pneumonia. A chest CT provides much greater detail and is preferred for evaluating persistent or unexplained shortness of breath, chronic cough lasting more than 8 weeks, suspected lung nodules, post-COVID lung changes, characterizing abnormalities seen on X-ray, or screening for lung cancer in eligible patients. Dr. Hsieh determines the right imaging modality based on your symptoms and history.
I have a pulmonary nodule on a CT scan — what now?
Most pulmonary nodules are benign. Management depends on the size, density (solid vs. ground-glass), location, and your individual risk factors for lung cancer. Following Fleischner Society guidelines, small low-risk nodules are typically monitored with follow-up CT scans at specific intervals. Larger or suspicious nodules may need PET-CT, biopsy via bronchoscopy or CT-guided needle, or referral for surgical evaluation. Dr. Hsieh reviews your imaging in detail and develops a personalized follow-up plan.
Do I need a referral for chest imaging?
For HMO plans, an authorization from your primary care or specialist is usually required. PPO patients can often go directly to imaging centers with a physician order. We work with local imaging centers (Hoag, MemorialCare, RadNet, and others) to coordinate referrals and ensure timely scheduling. We always review results with you and explain next steps.
What is post-COVID lung evaluation?
Some patients experience persistent respiratory symptoms — cough, shortness of breath, fatigue, reduced exercise tolerance — for weeks or months after a COVID-19 infection. CT imaging can detect residual inflammation, scarring (fibrosis), or other lung changes. Combined with pulmonary function testing, this evaluation helps differentiate post-COVID lung disease from other causes and guides treatment.
